Arizona Monsoons and Your Insurance: What’s Actually Covered?

If you live in Arizona, you know monsoon storms can arrive suddenly and cause serious damage. But when the dust settles, literally, the big question is: will insurance cover it?
Wind Damage

High winds are typically covered under a standard homeowners policy. This includes damage to roofs, siding, fences, and windows caused by wind or flying debris.

Flooding

Here’s the catch: most homeowners policies do not cover flood damage — including flash floods caused by heavy monsoon rain. To be protected, you need a separate flood insurance policy, even if you don’t live in a designated floodplain.

Power Surges

If lightning strikes your home or causes a power surge that damages electronics or appliances, that’s usually covered. However, power outages that spoil food in your fridge may only be covered if you’ve added a specific endorsement.

Fallen Trees

If a monsoon knocks a tree onto your house, your policy should cover repairs. But if it falls into your yard without damaging insured structures, coverage may be limited.

The Bottom Line

Not all monsoon losses are created equal. Reviewing your policy before the storm season starts can save you from expensive surprises. A quick check with your agent ensures you’re covered from wind to water.
